Defund Obamacare town halls draw crowds

The Defund Obamacare town hall tour, headlined by Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, has been a hit nationwide.

The audience numbered in the hundreds at every stop, starting off strong in week one with stops in Tampa, Fayetteville and Dallas.

“I haven’t seen this kind of energy since the tea party movement in 2010,” DeMint told the Indianapolis Star ahead of the Aug. 26 town hall, with more than 500 in attendance according to the paper. The Columbus Dispatch reported that 650 people attended the following night’s event in Columbus, and they were fired up about Republican lawmakers who campaigned on promises to get rid of Obamacare. “This is the time,” DeMint urged the Tampa crowd. “This might be the last off-ramp for us to stop Obamacare before it gets so enmeshed in our culture that it’s impossible to change.”

Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) father Rafael opened each town hall with a prayer that DeMint said served as a reminder: “Sometimes we seem angry as conservatives, but we need to begin every conversation, every redress of grievances with what came from that prayer, just a gratefulness that we are Americans, that we live in this country, a wonderful country, a recognition that we are so blessed to be here,” he said in Wilmington.

“Freedom is really when millions of people can make their own decisions about what they want to do and what they value,” he continued. “When we have politics and politicians who want to take those freedoms away and replace it with a centrally planned, centrally managed system that has destroyed so many nations, our gratefulness then turns to frustration, and sometimes anger, when people are destroying those principles that we know might make life better for everyone who lives in this country.”

He added a promise: “We’re not here tonight just for ourselves or people who vote for conservative ideas. As conservatives, we’re not going to rest until every American can get their hands on the ladder of opportunity and climb as high as the can dream. That’s what we’re about.”
